An edit feels like the thrifty move, and on Kling it usually is not: one Kling O1 edit bills 30 credits for every second of video you hand it, so a 5-second edit costs 150 credits while seven different ways of regenerating the whole clip from scratch cost less. The number that settles it is the per-second rate your original clip was made at.
Edit when the clip came from Kling 3.0, Kling 4.0 or Kling 3.0 Omni — those bill 35–75 credits per second, so a 30-per-second edit is a real saving. Regenerate when it came from anything else — Kling O3, Turbo, Lite, Fast, 2.6, Avatar and the motion models all bill 30 per second or less, which makes a full reroll cheaper than an edit. Break-even sits at 30 credits per second (Standard), 40 (Pro).

An edit is billed per second of the video you supply
Video rates are normally quoted per second of output, and Kling O1's own model card says output length matches input, so it looks like a wash. It is not, because you are paying for it on top of a source clip you already bought.
The edit rate card, read straight from the live credit config on 25 August 2026:

A 5-second repair is 150 credits, a 10-second one is 300, and the Pro lane takes those to 200 and 400. Supplying a video doubles the rate against the same model generating fresh — 30 versus 20 at Standard.
The test to run before you spend anything
Work out what the original clip cost per second, then hold it against your edit rate — 30 at Standard, 40 at Pro. The table below uses the Standard line; on Pro, everything from Kling 3.0 Turbo down still says regenerate, and Kling 3.0 Standard with audio at 50 a second still says edit.

Above your edit rate, an edit costs less than a rebuild. Below it, you are paying a premium to keep frames you did not much like anyway.
When to edit, and when to regenerate instead
Price is the second question. The first is whether an edit can reach the thing that broke at all. Kling O1's model card is unusually explicit here: it changes "characters, environments, or visual style while preserving the original motion and timing". Motion and timing are what it protects, so anything wrong with either is out of reach of an edit by design.

Three failures worth paying for an edit
Wrong background, right subject. Environment change is one of the three transformations O1 documents. Subject, framing and timing survive; only the plate moves. Regenerating throws away a face you liked to fix a wall you did not.
A character who drifts between shots. Character replacement is the second documented transformation, and O1 takes up to four reference inputs alongside the video. A reroll gives you a differently wrong face; an edit with the reference fed back in is the direct route. Kling 3.0 Omni works the same way on the generation side.
A style or grade that is off. Visual style is the third documented transformation. Warmer, harsher, more filmic — and because motion and timing are preserved, the take you already approved stays intact.
Four failures to regenerate instead
Lip sync that does not land. Rebuild on Kling Avatar 2.0 at 10 credits a second — 50 for five seconds, a third of the repair price, on a model built for this one job.
Jittery or warped motion. The model preserves motion by design, so the jitter is exactly the thing it will carry forward. An edit is the one tool guaranteed not to help here.
A clip that is too short. Output length matches input, and O1 only accepts sources between 3 and 10 seconds. A 2-second clip cannot be edited at all; a short one cannot be stretched. Regenerate at 10 seconds.
A prompt that was simply wrong. Fix the words, not the frames — the cheapest correction available on the site.
O1 accepts sources of 3–10 seconds, 720–2160px, and up to 200MB, and returns the same duration it was given. A clip outside that window cannot be edited at any price — and because motion and timing are preserved, no edit invents a camera move that was not shot.
Two limits that make an edit worse than it looks
Longer sources scale linearly, so a 10-second Pro edit reaches 400 credits — more than regenerating on Kling 4.0 at Standard with audio, which is 290 for five seconds and 575 for ten.
And every edit is a fresh roll of the dice. An instruction that misses costs exactly what one that lands costs, so two attempts at a 5-second Pro edit is 400 credits with no guarantee attached. None of that appears on a rate card.
Regenerating for less than an edit costs
Once you have chosen the reroll, three habits keep the bill under the 150-credit edit line.
Drop audio while you iterate. Kling 3.0 Standard falls from 50 credits a second to 35 — 175 rather than 250 for five seconds. Switch it back on for the take you keep.
Block the shot out on a cheap model. Kling O3 Standard without audio is 15 credits a second, so a 5-second test is 75. Settle framing and motion there, then spend flagship credits once — still less than one edit.
Go to 4K last. 4K bills 65 credits a second on Kling 3.0 and about 75 on Kling 4.0 — 325 and 375 for five seconds. Approve at 720p, then make one 4K pass rather than one edit.
Block out at 75, then take it at 250 on Kling 3.0 Standard with audio: 325 credits for a shot you chose, against 400 for one Pro edit that may not land. Is an edit cheaper than regenerating a Kling video?
Usually not. One O1 edit is 30 credits per second of supplied video at Standard and 40 at Pro. Only clips originally made above that rate — Kling 3.0, Kling 4.0 and Kling 3.0 Omni — are cheaper to edit than to rebuild.
